It is often called Ruism by modern scholars. Some people see it as a philosophy or a religion. Others call it a theory of government. It focuses on how people should behave. The goal is to create social harmony. This happens through virtue and responsibility to one's family. It is a way to make the world a better place.

To live well, people practice several important virtues. One key idea is ren, which means benevolence or kindness. Another is yi, which means righteousness. People also follow li, which refers to proper behavior or rites. Wisdom, called zhi, and sincerity, called xin, are also vital. These values help people work together in a community. By improving themselves, people help the whole society. This is a way to connect human life to a larger order.

Confucius founded these ideas around 500 BCE. This was during a time called the Hundred Schools of Thought. He wanted to pass on values from older dynasties. These included the Xia, Shang, and Western Zhou dynasties.

There are many famous texts linked to this tradition. These are often called the Five Classics. They include the I Ching and the Classic of Poetry.

The Book of Documents shares stories of ancient leaders. The Book of Rites describes social forms and ceremonies. The Spring and Autumn Annals records history from the state of Lu. These books help teach people about history and ethics. They provide a guide for how to act in the world.

Confucianism has a huge impact on many different places. It is very important in China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.
