The Analects is an ancient Chinese book filled with ideas.

It is also known as the Sayings of Confucius. This text contains the thoughts of a teacher named Confucius and his students. Many people believe his followers wrote these ideas down after he died in 479 BC. The book is very important to a way of thinking called Confucianism. It has been studied in China for over two thousand years. These ideas still shape how people think in East Asia today.

Confucius had many ideas about how to live a good life. He believed a country stays strong if its people are moral. This starts with the people in charge of the nation. He taught that people can grow through a sense of kindness called ren. A big part of this is filial piety, which means respecting parents and older siblings.

He also taught about li, which are rituals and ways to show respect. He believed people should use these rituals to balance their own desires. His goal was to teach students to be honest and act with integrity.

Creating this book was a long process that took many years. Most scholars think much of it was written during the Warring States period. This was a time between 475 and 221 BC. The book reached its final form during the mid-Han dynasty.

At first, people saw it as just a guide to older books. By the end of the Han dynasty, it became a main text. Later, during the Song dynasty, it was named one of the "Four Books."

Historians have found many different versions of these writings. In the early Han dynasty, there were two main versions. One was the "Lu version" with twenty chapters. The other was the "Qi version" with twenty-two chapters.

A third "Old Text" version was even found hidden in a wall. A scholar named Zhang Yu later combined the Lu and Qi versions. He created the version of the Analects that most people recognize today. This combined text is known as the "Zhang Hou Lun."

New discoveries help us understand the book even better. In the 2010s, researchers found old manuscripts in places like Wangjiazui. These pieces date back to before 300 BCE.

They prove that people were organizing Confucius's sayings very early on. Other old copies were found in tombs, like the Dingzhou and Pyongyang versions. Some of these were found in the 1970s and 1990s. These finds show how the book grew and changed over many centuries.
