The book works by showing a step-by-step path to wisdom. It teaches a method called the "investigation of things." This is not like a science experiment in a lab. Instead, it is a way to look deeply inside your own mind. This process helps a person understand morality and their duties to others. By looking inward, a person can reach a state of calm and peace. Once a person is calm, they can make careful choices and reach their goals. The text says that affairs have a beginning and an end, just like trees have roots and branches.

The history of this book goes back many centuries. It began as a chapter in a larger work called the Book of Rites. A student of Confucius named Zengzi is said to have written the main text. Zengzi lived a long time ago, from 505 to 436 BCE. Later, during the Song dynasty, a scholar named Zhu Xi changed how the book was used. He took the Great Learning out of the Book of Rites to make it its own book. He also grouped it with three other books to create the Four Books. This made the teachings easier for more people to study and understand.

Many important people have shaped the way we read this text. During the Han dynasty, scholars like Ma Rong added their own views to the book. In the Song dynasty, the Cheng brothers, Yi and Hao, used these ideas to talk about nature. Zhu Xi was a student of Li Tong and helped organize the book into ten parts. He published a collection called the Four Masters in the winter of 1190 CE. This collection became the main guide for students taking big exams in China. These exams were used to choose people for important jobs in the government.

The ideas in the Great Learning have traveled far across the world. It did not just stay in China, but also influenced Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Even today, these teachings are a big part of education in many places. In China, the focus on hard work and memorization can be traced back to these old texts. Many students still learn through group work to follow the value of harmony. The belief that anyone can succeed through effort remains a very strong idea. Learning is seen as a way to improve one's life and social standing.
