Cheng Yi was a very important thinker in China. He lived during the Song Dynasty. He was a philosopher and a writer. He also worked in the government as a politician.

Cheng Yi was a major part of a system called neo-Confucianism. This is a way of thinking about life and rules. His ideas helped start the Cheng-Zhu school. Some people call this the Rationalistic School. His work changed how many people thought about the world.

Cheng Yi learned from many great teachers. He was a student of a man named Zhou Dunyi. He was also related to a thinker named Zhang Zai.

Cheng Yi worked closely with his older brother, Cheng Hao. A follower named Zhu Xi called them part of the Six Great Masters. This group also included Shao Yong and Sima Guang. These men shaped many ideas that lasted for a long time.

His life was not always easy. Cheng Yi was known for being very strong in his views. This made some people his enemies.

In 1097, his enemies banned his teachings. They also took his property and sent him away. He was pardoned in 1100. However, his work was banned again in 1103. He was finally pardoned for the last time in 1106. He died one year later in 1107.

Many people respected him deeply. There is a famous story about his students. Two men named Yang Shi and You Zuo wanted to learn from him.

They stood outside his door in the snow for many hours. This showed their great respect for their master. This story is known as a special phrase in China. It shows how much people valued learning from him.

Cheng Yi also had ideas about how people should live. He believed widows should not marry again. He thought this was important for their honor. He said losing honor was a very big matter.

He mostly meant this for scholar-officials. He understood that life was different for poor farmers. His ideas about honor became very well known in later times. They influenced many people during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
