Song was an ancient state located in China. It was part of the Zhou dynasty. The state began after King Wu of Zhou conquered the Shang dynasty in 1046 BC.

King Wu followed a rule of polite etiquette. He allowed the defeated Shang family to keep offering sacrifices to their ancestors. Because of this, a man named Weizi was given land at Shangqiu. This place is known as the 'hill of Shang.' The capital of the new state of Song was built there. Song was unique because it used a different way to choose leaders. Instead of the oldest son always taking over, they used a rule called agnatic seniority. This helped the state keep its connection to the old Shang roots.

Leaders in Song held power for many different lengths of time. Some rulers faced hard times, while others were very strong. In 701 BC, a marriage between Lady Yong of Song and Duke Zhuang of Zheng changed things. This helped Song influence how Zheng was run. Later, Duke Xiang ruled from 651 to 637 BC. Some people even called him a hegemon, which means a powerful leader. However, he could not keep that high position forever. He eventually lost his power to the troops of Chu.

Changes in the government often came from within the royal family. In 355 BC, a man named Dai Ticheng took the throne. He was a relative of the old royal line. He was once a minister to Duke Huan II. A few years later, his brother Dai Yan took control in 328 BC. Dai Yan was very ambitious and called himself King Kang of Song. He was a successful warrior who beat troops from Chu, Wei, and Qi. He even took over a place called Teng.

Even strong kings could not stop the state from falling. The state of Song was finally taken over by the state of Qi in 286 BC. This happened during a time called the Warring States period. During this takeover, troops from Chu and Wei helped the state of Qi. A state called Qin was once an ally of Song. However, Qin did not come to help Song during its final struggle. A man named Su Dai from Wei convinced Qin to stay out of the fight.

Song left a mark on history and even on the stars. The famous thinker Confucius is said to be a descendant of Song nobles. Some people believe his family moved from Song to the state of Lu. In the sky, the state of Song is linked to a star. This star is called Eta Ophiuchi. It sits in a group of stars called the Heavenly Market enclosure.
