Conquering China required careful political moves. In 1644, the Ming dynasty was collapsing due to peasant rebels. A Ming general named Wu Sangui opened the Shanhai Pass to the Qing army. This allowed the Qing to seize the capital, Beijing. The Qing took over the government under the Shunzhi Emperor. However, full control was not immediate. Resistance from Ming remnants and the Revolt of the Three Feudatories lasted until 1683. This year marked the start of the High Qing era.

Despite this success, the empire eventually faced deep crises. After the Qianlong Emperor, internal revolts and corruption emerged. The population grew to 400 million, but tax revenues stayed low. This created a fiscal crisis. Foreign powers also began to intrude. Following the Opium Wars, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and the United States forced the Qing to sign unequal treaties. These treaties granted foreign nations trading privileges and treaty ports.

The end of the dynasty came through revolution. In 1900, the Boxer Rebellion led to an invasion by the Eight-Nation Alliance. In response, the government tried many late reforms. These included new legal codes and the abolition of the imperial examination system. However, revolutionaries like Sun Yat-sen pushed for a modern state. The Wuchang Uprising began the Xinhai Revolution in October 1911. Finally, the Xuantong Emperor abdicated in February 1912. This event officially ended the Qing dynasty and the imperial system.
