Qing dynasty

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Qing dynasty was the final imperial era in Chinese history. Officially called the Great Qing, it was a Manchu-led empire in East Asia. This dynasty ruled from 1644 until 1912. It followed the Ming dynasty and was succeeded by the Republic of China. The Qing was a multi-ethnic state that built the foundation for modern China. At its peak, the empire was incredibly vast. It stretched from the Sea of Japan in the east to the Pamir Mountains in the west. It reached from the Mongolian Plateau in the north to the South China Sea in the south.

The empire's origins lie with the Manchus. They were a sedentary farming people descended from the Jurchens. A leader named Nurhaci began unifying Jurchen clans in the early 17th century. He founded the Later Jin dynasty in 1616. Nurhaci also created the Eight Banners. This was a specialized military system including Manchu, Han, and Mongol elements.

After Nurhaci died in 1626, his son Hong Taiji became the leader. In 1636, Hong Taiji was declared the Emperor of the Great Qing. He adopted the name "Manchu" for his people in 1635. He also built an artillery corps to use European-style cannons.

Conquering China required careful political moves. In 1644, the Ming dynasty was collapsing due to peasant rebels. A Ming general named Wu Sangui opened the Shanhai Pass to the Qing army. This allowed the Qing to seize the capital, Beijing. The Qing took over the government under the Shunzhi Emperor. However, full control was not immediate. Resistance from Ming remnants and the Revolt of the Three Feudatories lasted until 1683. This year marked the start of the High Qing era.

The dynasty saw periods of great strength and growth. The Kangxi Emperor ruled from 1661 to 1722. He consolidated control and encouraged economic growth. He also supported scholarship and Buddhism.

Later, the Qianlong Emperor ruled from 1735 to 1796. He led the Ten Great Campaigns of conquest. Under his rule, the empire reached its highest point of power. The Qing used a tributary system to manage neighbors like Joseon Korea and the Lê dynasty in Vietnam. They also extended control over Inner Asia.

Despite this success, the empire eventually faced deep crises. After the Qianlong Emperor, internal revolts and corruption emerged. The population grew to 400 million, but tax revenues stayed low. This created a fiscal crisis. Foreign powers also began to intrude. Following the Opium Wars, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and the United States forced the Qing to sign unequal treaties. These treaties granted foreign nations trading privileges and treaty ports.

Violence and instability increased in the 19th century. The Taiping Rebellion and the Dungan Revolt were devastating. These conflicts caused over 20 million deaths from war, famine, and disease. In 1894, the First Sino-Japanese War resulted in a defeat for the Qing. This led to the loss of suzerainty over Korea and the cession of Taiwan to Japan.

There were attempts to modernize through the Self-Strengthening Movement and the Hundred Days' Reform. However, the Empress Dowager Cixi stopped the reforms during the Wuxu Coup in 1898.

The end of the dynasty came through revolution. In 1900, the Boxer Rebellion led to an invasion by the Eight-Nation Alliance. In response, the government tried many late reforms. These included new legal codes and the abolition of the imperial examination system. However, revolutionaries like Sun Yat-sen pushed for a modern state. The Wuchang Uprising began the Xinhai Revolution in October 1911. Finally, the Xuantong Emperor abdicated in February 1912. This event officially ended the Qing dynasty and the imperial system.
