They are native to the region of Manchuria. Today, they are an officially recognized ethnic minority in China. The Manchu are actually the fourth-largest ethnic group in China. They live across 31 different provincial regions. About half of the Manchu population lives in Liaoning. Another fifth of the population lives in Hebei. Other large groups live in Beijing, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Inner Mongolia.

Tracing their history requires looking at the Jurchen people. The Manchus are descended from these earlier groups. Some historians link them to the Mohe people. The Mohe were mainly sedentary farmers. They practiced pig husbandry and grew crops like soybeans, wheat, millet, and rice. They even used dog and pig skins for clothing. This lifestyle was different from the nomadic pastoralism of the Mongols. In the 10th century, the term Jurchen first appeared in Tang dynasty documents. These people were settled farmers with advanced agriculture. They raised oxen, sheep, and horses alongside their crops.

The Jurchen people were significant political leaders. In 1114, Wanyan Aguda united the tribes.

He established the Jin dynasty, which ruled from 1115 to 1234. This dynasty eventually controlled much of northern China. However, the Mongol rise changed everything. In 1206, Genghis Khan led the Mongols against the Jurchens. The Jurchen Jin dynasty was defeated by Ögedei Khan in 1234. During the Yuan dynasty, many Jurchens adopted Mongolian customs. They often used Mongolian names and the Mongolian language. Over time, many lost the ability to read the original Jurchen script.

The transition to the name "Manchu" happened in the 17th century. In 1635, Emperor Hong Taiji adopted "Manchu" as the official name. This replaced the older name, Jurchen. The exact meaning of the word is still debated by scholars. One theory suggests it is a compound word. It may come from "mangga," meaning strong, and "ju," meaning arrow. This would make the name mean "intrepid arrow." Another study in 2022 suggests a different origin. It links the name to the lower Amur River. This connection is found in other Tungusic languages.

Manchu identity has survived through many changes. Some families reclaimed their ethnicity in recent years. For example, members of the Wanyan clan changed their names to Wang. They later successfully applied to be recognized as Manchu. The Nian clan is another rare group of Jurchen origin. There are fewer than 30,000 members of the Nian clan worldwide. Many live in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. This shows how the Manchu diaspora has spread far from their original home.

Today, the Manchu legacy is visible in many ways. There are over 300 Manchu towns and townships in China. These include many autonomous counties like Xinbin and Xiuyan. The history of the Manchu is tied to the history of East Asia. Their movements shaped the borders and cultures of many nations. Understanding the Manchu helps us understand the complex history of China. It shows how different ethnic groups can shape a whole empire.
