His leadership transformed a collection of tribes into a massive empire. He was the eighth son of the leader Nurhaci. After Nurhaci died in 1626, Hong Taiji took control of the government. He focused on consolidating power and preparing for future conquests.

His rise to power was a complex political process. After the deposition of the original crown prince, Cuyen, power was shared. Hong Taiji was one of the Four Senior Beiles. A beile was a high-ranking prince or leader. He held the rank of the fourth beile. He also controlled the Plain White Banner troops. These were military groups that helped manage the empire's strength.

During this time, he worked to maintain good relations with his brothers and cousins.

To secure his position, Hong Taiji used careful diplomacy. He was a skilled strategist and politician. He competed for leadership mainly against a prince named Daisan. Hong Taiji showed respect to other leaders during his coronation. He even bowed to his brothers and cousins to show he was elected honorably. He promised to share administrative power with the other senior beiles. Eventually, he slowly reduced the power of his competitors. He gained control of the strongest military groups, known as the Upper Three Banners.

Hong Taiji implemented several major identity changes. In 1635, he changed the name of the Jurchen people to "Manchu." In 1636, he changed the name of his dynasty from Great Jin to Great Qing.

He also used different names to record dates during his reign. From 1627 to 1636, his reign name was Tiancong. From 1636 to 1643, it was Chongde. These names helped establish the formal authority of the new Qing dynasty.

His ethnic and social policies helped manage a diverse population. He began recruiting Han Chinese officials to help run the state. In 1632, he arranged a mass marriage of 1,000 Han Chinese couples to Manchu women. This was intended to promote harmony between different groups. He also created the Mongol Yamen in 1636. This was a government office used to rule Inner Mongolia indirectly. In 1638, this office was renamed the Lifanyuan.

These systems helped integrate various cultures into his growing state.

Military expansion was a central part of his rule. He developed the Eight Banners system to organize his soldiers. This system allowed Han and Mongol people to join the state. Hong Taiji also improved his army's technology. He noticed the strength of the Ming dynasty's artillery. To compete, he upgraded his own weapons. He purchased Red Cannons to ensure his army had equal might. This helped him build one of the strongest cavalries in Asia.

His military campaigns reached many different regions. In 1627, his forces crossed the frozen Yalu River into Korea. By 1637, the Joseon dynasty of Korea had surrendered. This made Korea a tributary state of the Qing dynasty. He also won three major wars to take over Inner Mongolia. These victories protected the northern borders of his empire. Although he died in 1643, he had already laid the groundwork for the conquest of the Ming dynasty.

Historians study Hong Taiji to understand the origins of the Qing era. He was given the temple name Taizong. This name is traditionally given to a dynasty's second emperor. His posthumous name was Emperor Wen, which means "the culturing emperor."
