His father, Zheng Zhilong, was a Chinese merchant from Fujian. His mother was a Japanese woman named Tagawa. At age seven, he moved to the Fujian province in China. He studied at the Guozijian, which was the Imperial University. There, he became a student of the famous scholar Qian Qianyi. In 1638, he passed the imperial examinations to become a Xiucai. This showed his high level of education and skill.

In 1644, the Ming dynasty began to fall. The Manchus were invading and establishing the Qing dynasty. In 1645, the Longwu Emperor gave Zheng Sen a new name. This name was Chenggong, which means "achieving success." The Emperor also gave him the imperial surname Zhu. This is why he is known by the title Koxinga. This title means "lord granted with imperial surname."

He used this name to show his deep loyalty.

Koxinga's family life changed during these wars. His father, Zheng Zhilong, eventually surrendered to the Qing forces in 1646. This left Koxinga to lead the family's military forces. During this time, his mother, Lady Tagawa, faced great hardship. She refused to submit to the enemy forces. Traditional accounts say she died by suicide in Anping. After his father's surrender, Koxinga worked to build his own power. He used strong naval forces to launch raids on Manchu territory.

Koxinga fought many battles against the Qing government. In 1656, he defeated the Manchus at Kinmen. A major storm helped his victory during this naval battle. Later, Koxinga attempted to capture the city of Nanjing. He wanted a single, decisive battle to win the war. The siege of Nanjing lasted for nearly three weeks starting in August 1656. However, his forces could not fully surround the city. The Qing forces eventually defeated him, and he retreated to his ships.

In 1661, Koxinga turned his attention to Taiwan.

The Dutch East India Company had ruled the island for 38 years. Koxinga believed the island belonged to China. He led a massive force to attack the Dutch colonists. During the Siege of Fort Zeelandia, local Aboriginal tribes joined Koxinga. They defected from the Dutch to support the Chinese forces. On February 1, 1662, the Dutch Governor Frederick Coyett surrendered. This victory ended decades of Dutch colonial rule.

After winning in Taiwan, Koxinga worked to build a new state.

He wanted to turn the island into a military base. He helped the local Aboriginal people by providing oxen and tools. He also taught them new farming techniques. He gave them Ming-style clothing and tobacco to build connections. Koxinga died suddenly in June 1662. He was planning an invasion of the Philippines at the time. His death occurred while he was reacting to events in Manila.

Koxinga's legacy is still visible in Asia today.
