Lee Teng-hui was a significant statesman, economist, and agronomist from Taiwan. He served as the fourth president of the Republic of China. He also led the Kuomintang, a major political party, from 1988 to 2000.

Lee holds a unique place in history. He was the first president born in Taiwan. He was also the first president chosen through a direct election by the people. His leadership helped guide Taiwan through a major change toward democracy.

Lee was born on January 23, 1923, in Sanshi Village. This was a rural farming community near Tamsui. His family had Hakka Chinese roots. His father, Li Chin-lung, was a policeman for the Japanese colonial government.

Growing up, Lee was a very diligent student. He attended several different schools because his father moved for work. By 1929, he was chosen as the class leader at his school. He graduated from Tamsui Common School in 1935, ranking second out of 104 students.

His education was shaped by the era of Japanese rule. During this time, schools focused on Japanese culture and indoctrination. Lee trained in martial arts like judo and kendo. He even carried the school's flag as a top student.

He was a voracious reader with many interests. He owned over 700 books by the time he reached high school. He studied history, philosophy, and classical music. In 1943, he earned a scholarship to Kyoto Imperial University in Japan. He studied in the Faculty of Agriculture, which was a top department at the time.

World War II changed the course of his studies. Lee volunteered for the Imperial Japanese Army. He served in an anti-aircraft unit in Kaohsiung. Later, he trained at an academy in Chiba Prefecture.

In 1945, he was stationed in Nagoya. During the war, he helped wounded people and assisted in evacuations. After Japan surrendered, he returned to his studies and graduated from Kyoto University in 1946. He then returned to Taiwan on an American ship.

In Taiwan, Lee focused on agricultural economics. He joined the Department of Agricultural Economics at National Taiwan University.

During this period, he explored different political ideas. He briefly joined communist groups, though he later said this was due to a "naive vision" for his country. He eventually moved to the United States for further study. He earned a doctorate from Cornell University in 1968.

He then began a career as an economics professor.

Lee's political career grew steadily through the 1970s and 1980s. He was appointed Mayor of Taipei in 1978. In 1981, he became the governor of Taiwan Province under President Chiang Ching-kuo.

When Chiang died in 1988, Lee succeeded him as president. During his presidency, he oversaw the end of martial law. This was a period of strict military rule. He led reforms to democratize the Republic of China. His work helped complete the transition to a democratic system.

After leaving office in 2000, Lee remained a powerful figure. He supported the Taiwan Solidarity Union, a party that favors independence. Because of his political activities, the Kuomintang expelled him in 2001. He also worked to maintain strong ties between Taiwan and Japan.

Lee Teng-hui passed away on July 30, 2020. His life connected the history of Japanese rule, the study of economics, and the birth of modern Taiwanese democracy.
