She served as the seventh president of the Republic of China from 2016 to 2024. Tsai made history as the first woman to hold the presidency in Taiwan. She was also a leader for the Democratic Progressive Party, known as the DPP. Throughout her career, she held several important roles within this political party. Her leadership helped shape the modern political landscape of Taiwan.

Tsai's journey began with a deep focus on the study of law. She was born in Taipei on August 31, 1956. She was the youngest of eleven children in her family. Her father, Tsai Chieh-sheng, ran an auto repair shop. Her mother, Chang Chin-fong, was a member of the Paiwan people.

Tsai earned her Bachelor of Laws from National Taiwan University in 1978. She later earned a Master of Laws from Cornell University in 1980. Finally, she received a PhD in law from the London School of Economics in 1984. After her studies, she worked as a law professor in Taiwan.

Before becoming president, Tsai held many different government positions. In the 1990s, she worked for the Fair Trade Commission and the Copyright Commission. She also served as a consultant for the National Security Council. In 2000, she became the chair of the Mainland Affairs Council. This council handles relations between Taiwan and mainland China. In 2004, she joined the DPP and became a legislator. She also served as Vice Premier, which is a high-ranking government role.

She later worked as the chair of a biotechnology company called TaiMedBiologics.

Tsai's rise to party leadership was a major milestone. In 2008, she was elected as the chair of the DPP. This made her the first woman to lead a major political party in Taiwan. She led the party through many different election cycles. In 2010, she was re-elected as the party chair. However, she lost the presidential election in 2012 to Ma Ying-jeou. She resigned from her party leadership position following that defeat. She later returned to lead the DPP again in 2014.

Her path to the presidency required several attempts and great persistence. In 2011, she became the first female presidential candidate nominated by a major party. After her first loss, she prepared for a rematch in 2016. She won the 2016 election with a landslide victory. She received 56.1% of the votes, beating her opponent Eric Chu.

This victory was a historic moment for women in Taiwanese politics. In 2020, she ran for re-election and won again. She defeated Han Kuo-yu with 57.1% of the vote. This was the highest vote share ever won by a DPP candidate.

During her presidency, Tsai focused on many different types of reform. She worked on pension reform to help manage the country's finances.

She also focused on long-term care for elderly citizens. Tsai pushed for judicial reform to improve the legal system. She helped lower the voting age from 20 to 18. This allowed more young people to participate in democracy. She also worked to establish a human rights commission. Her economic policies included the New Southbound Policy to diversify trade.

Tsai's presidency was also defined by how she handled international relations. She emphasized national security and democratic values. During her second term, she managed the country through the COVID-19 pandemic.
