He served from 2022 until his removal in 2025. His term was the shortest for an elected leader in the nation's democratic history. Before entering politics, Yoon had a long career as a prosecutor. A prosecutor is a government lawyer who investigates crimes. His legal background shaped his rise to power.

Yoon was born in Seoul in 1960. He studied law at Seoul National University. He earned both a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws there. In 1980, he participated in a mock trial. In this trial, he acted as a prosecutor. He demanded life imprisonment for President Chun Doo-hwan. This was a response to the Gwangju Uprising. Fearing for his safety, Yoon fled to Gangwon Province. He later passed the bar exam in 1991.

His legal career focused on corruption and high-level investigations. In 1994, he began working at the Daegu Public Prosecutor's Office. He later led investigations into major companies like Hyundai Motor Company. In 2017, President Moon Jae-in appointed him chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office. In this role, Yoon helped convict former presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye. These leaders were charged with corruption and abuse of power. In 2019, Yoon became the Prosecutor General.

As Prosecutor General, Yoon faced intense political conflict. He led investigations into Cho Kuk, a member of the Moon administration. These investigations led to Cho's resignation as Minister of Justice. This caused a major clash between Yoon and the government. The Minister of Justice, Choo Mi-ae, eventually suspended Yoon from his duties. This suspension was part of a larger struggle over political power. Yoon fought these actions in court. He eventually regained his position through legal injunctions.

Yoon entered the presidential race in 2021. He joined the conservative People Power Party. He ran on a platform of economic deregulation. He also proposed abolishing the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. On March 9, 2022, he won the election. He defeated Lee Jae Myung by less than one percentage point.

He was the first elected president born after the Korean War ended.

During his presidency, Yoon changed South Korea's foreign policy. He sought closer ties with the United States and Japan.

He also took a very tough stance toward North Korea. However, his leadership faced significant domestic challenges. He faced criticism regarding a medical crisis and the Seoul Halloween crowd crush. In 2024, his party lost the parliamentary midterm elections. This loss weakened his ability to govern effectively.

In December 2024, Yoon took a drastic action. He declared martial law. This was the first time martial law was used since 1980. He claimed members of the National Assembly supported North Korea. The National Assembly passed a motion to stop the declaration. This led to massive public protests. The legislature then moved to impeach him. Yoon was successfully impeached and suspended from his powers.

Yoon's presidency ended through a series of legal steps. He became the first sitting president to be arrested. In April 2025, the Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment. This officially ended his time in office. In February 2026, a court sentenced him to life imprisonment. The conviction was for orchestrating an insurrection. This event marked a major moment in South Korean political history.
