He is a prominent politician and a professional diplomat. A diplomat is a person who represents their country in international relations. Tokayev has held many high-level positions within the Kazakh government. He served as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2002. He also served as Chairman of the Senate during two different periods. His career involves managing both domestic laws and international agreements. This makes him a central figure in the history of modern Kazakhstan.

Tokayev's journey began with extensive education and international training. He was born in 1953 in Alma-Ata, which is now called Almaty.

His father, Kemel Tokayev, was a famous writer and a veteran. In 1970, Tokayev enrolled at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. There, he studied Mandarin, the language used in China. He also attended the Beijing Language Institute for training. After graduating in 1975, he joined the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He worked at the Soviet embassy in Singapore and later in Beijing. These roles helped him build a deep understanding of global politics.

After Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991, Tokayev entered the nation's foreign service. He served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs during two separate terms.

During this time, he focused heavily on nuclear non-proliferation. Non-proliferation is the effort to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. He helped sign the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 1996. He also worked on the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapons-Free Zone in Central Asia. These efforts were vital for regional stability and global security. He used his diplomatic rank as an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to lead these talks.

Tokayev also served as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan.

He held this position from 1999 to 2002 under President Nursultan Nazarbayev. His government focused on the agricultural sector and domestic producers. He also prioritized the timely payment of pensions and sports development. Under his leadership, the economy saw significant growth. In 2001, the GDP expanded by 13.5 percent. He also helped reduce inflation by 11.2 percent. However, he resigned in 2002 because of the high centralization of power.

In 2011, Tokayev moved to a major international role. He became the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Tokayev became the acting president in March 2019. This occurred after President Nursultan Nazarbayev resigned.

He won the snap presidential election in June 2019. In January 2022, Kazakhstan experienced a period of intense unrest. Protests over fuel prices escalated into violent events. Tokayev declared a state of emergency and requested peacekeeping help. Following this crisis, he implemented major constitutional changes. These changes included reducing the length of presidential terms. He also moved to distance his leadership from the previous administration.
