His presidency lasted from 2007 until 2014. Before reaching this high office, he held several vital roles in the Turkish government. He served as Prime Minister for four months starting in 2002. He also worked as the Deputy Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister between 2003 and 2007. His career represents a major shift in how religion and politics interact in Turkey.

Gül's journey into leadership began with his education and early political interests. He was born in Kayseri on October 29, 1950. He studied economics at Istanbul University and spent two years at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.

After earning his PhD in 1983, he worked for the Islamic Development Bank in Saudi Arabia. During his university years, he joined the National Turkish Students' Union. This early involvement shaped his views on the relationship between Islam and the state.

His political path involved navigating several changes in Turkish party systems. He was first elected to Parliament for the Welfare Party in 1991 and 1995. However, the Constitutional Court banned that party for anti-secular activities. Gül then joined the Virtue Party in 1998. When that party split into different factions, Gül chose to work with the moderates. He joined Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to advocate for reform and moderation.

This group eventually co-founded the Justice and Development Party, known as the AKP, in 2001.

The AKP aimed to be a moderate conservative party following European traditions. Gül believed that being Muslim and being modern could exist together. He supported values like liberalism, human rights, and a market economy. After the AKP won a landslide victory in the 2002 general election, Gül became Prime Minister. This happened because Erdoğan was temporarily banned from holding political office.

Once the ban was removed in 2003, Erdoğan became Prime Minister, and Gül moved to foreign affairs.

As Foreign Minister, Gül worked to connect Turkey to the wider world. He helped Turkey try to join the European Union. He also worked to improve relations with Syria and countries in Central Asia. In January 2008, he traveled to the United States to meet President George W. Bush.

He also met with leaders like Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to manage regional ties.

These meetings were part of his effort to build international partnerships.

Becoming president in 2007 was a historic and difficult process. Some people in Turkey strongly opposed his candidacy. They were worried about his background in Islamic politics and his views on secularism. The Constitutional Court even initially blocked his bid. However, after a snap general election in 2007, Gül was elected by Parliament in August.

He became the first Turkish president with a background in Islamic politics, marking a new era.

Gül's presidency included several moments of political tension and controversy. He signed several laws that the political opposition called unconstitutional. In 2013, he signed a law restricting alcohol consumption. This decision was seen as a factor in the Gezi Park protests. He also signed laws regarding internet regulation and the judiciary in 2013 and 2014.
