In 2007, Gül ran to be the president. Some people in Turkey were worried about his background. They wanted leaders who focused on secularism, which means keeping religion and government separate. However, he won the election in August 2007. He was the first president with a background in Islamic politics. This was a major change for the nation's history.

As president, Gül made many important decisions. He worked to improve relations with many different countries. He met with leaders like U.S. President George W. Bush in 2008.

He also signed many new laws during his time in office. Some of these laws were controversial and caused protests. For example, he signed a law about alcohol in 2013. He also signed laws about the internet and the courts. These events showed how much his leadership changed the country.
