Hassan Gouled Aptidon was a very important leader for the nation of Djibouti.

He helped his country become its own independent land. He served as the very first President of Djibouti. He held this high position for many years. His life story shows how one person can shape a whole country. He was born in a small village called Gerisa in 1916. This village was in the Lughaya district of British Somaliland.

Before he was a president, he had many different jobs. In 1932, he worked as a nurse in a place called Dikhil. Later, he became an entrepreneur, which is a person who starts businesses. He also worked with young people in a special club. In 1946, he and Mahamoud Harbi Farah started the Somali and Dankali Youth Club. Hassan later served in the French Senate from 1952 to 1957. He also served in the French National Assembly between 1959 and 1962. He even worked as a minister for education in the 1960s.

Hassan spent much of his life fighting for independence. This means he wanted his land to rule itself instead of being ruled by France. In 1974, he called for a vote to decide the future. He became the president of a group called the LPAI in 1975. This group was formed when two other groups joined together. In May 1977, he became the President of the Governing Council. By May 28, 1977, he was elected the first President of the Republic of Djibouti. He stayed in this role until 1999.

His time as leader had many different parts. In 1981, he made his party, the RPP, the only legal party. This meant it was a one-party state for a while. He won an election in 1981 with 84.58% of the vote. Later, a civil war began in Djibouti in 1991. Because of this, he allowed more than one party to join politics in 1992. In 1993, he was elected to a fourth term as president. During the 1990s, the economy in Djibouti faced many hard times.

As Hassan grew older, his nephew Ismaïl Omar Guelleh began to help him. His nephew eventually took over many of the duties of the president. In February 1999, Hassan announced he would retire. His nephew won the election and became the new president in May 1999. Hassan lived to be 90 years old before he died in 2006. He received many honors during his life. One honor was the Order of the Crown of the Realm.
