He lived through many big changes in his country. Aidid was born in 1934 in a place called Beledweyne. He was part of the Habar Gidir subclan. As a young man, he learned to speak Italian. He also learned how to use a typewriter. These skills helped him start a long career in service. He wanted to see a strong and independent Somalia.

Aidid spent many years learning about military life. He went to an infantry school in Rome, Italy. Later, he studied at the Frunze Military Academy in the Soviet Union. This was a very special school for top officers. After Somalia became independent in 1960, he joined the national army. He rose to the rank of Brigadier general. He led troops during the Ogaden War in 1977. He also led soldiers during the Border War in 1982.

Life was not always easy for Aidid. In 1969, a new group took control of the government. This group was led by Siad Barre. Aidid was sent to Mandera Prison for nearly six years. He was released in 1975 and went back to the army. Later, President Barre sent Aidid to India as an ambassador. While living in India, Aidid wrote three different books. These books were about the history and future of Somalia. He studied hard at the University of Delhi during this time.

In 1989, Aidid made a very big choice. He left his job in India to join a rebel group. This group was called the United Somali Congress. They wanted to remove Siad Barre from power. In early 1991, the rebels succeeded in toppling the government. This event started a Somali civil war. A civil war happens when people within one country fight each other. Different groups fought to lead the new government. Much of the city of Mogadishu was destroyed during this fighting.

Aidid also had a difficult time with the United Nations. In 1993, there was a clash involving UN troops. The United Nations blamed Aidid and his group for the event. This made him a wanted man. The United States even sent special troops to find him. This led to a famous battle in Mogadishu in October 1993. After many years of fighting, Aidid died in 1996. He was wounded during a battle in his home city. His life remains a major part of Somali history.
