He was born on March 21, 1947, to a poor family in a village called Beit al-Ahmar. His early life was shaped by his family and his training in the military. He joined the North Yemeni Armed Forces in 1958 as a soldier. Later, he went to the Royal Military Academy to learn more. By 1963, he was a second lieutenant in the armored corps. He worked hard to rise through the ranks over many years.

Saleh's path to power began after a change in leadership in 1978. The president of North Yemen, Ahmad al-Ghashmi, was assassinated that year. Before this, Saleh had served as a military governor in the city of Taiz. After the assassination, Saleh was chosen to lead the country. He was elected president of the Yemen Arab Republic on July 17, 1978. He also held important roles as the chief of staff and commander-in-chief. He used his military background to help bring stability to the land.

In 1990, a very big change happened for the people of Yemen. North Yemen and South Yemen joined together to become one new country.

Saleh became the first president of this unified Republic of Yemen. He shared power at first through a group called the Presidential Council. This council included leaders like Ali Salem al-Beidh and Abdullah al-Ahmar. However, divisions between the north and south led to a brief civil war. Saleh's forces won that conflict in July 1994. From then on, he ruled the country with a lot of control.

Saleh stayed in power through many different elections and rules.

In 1999, he became the first president to be directly elected by the people. He won that election with 96.2% of the votes. He also won elections in 2006 and a vote on the constitution in 2001. Some people said his rule was not always fair to others. He often gave important government jobs to his own family members. This helped him keep his power for a very long time.

In 2011, many people in Yemen began to protest for change. This was part of a larger movement called the Arab Spring. Because of these protests, Saleh resigned from his job in 2012.

Later, a civil war started in Yemen. Saleh joined a group called the Houthis to fight against the new government. In December 2017, he decided to switch sides again to work with his old enemies. During a battle in the capital city of Sanaa, Saleh was killed on December 4, 2017. His life was a long story of leadership and many big changes.
