He served as the first president of the unified Republic of Yemen from 1990 until 2012. Before that, he was the leader of North Yemen, known as the Yemen Arab Republic. Saleh was a military officer who rose from a poor family to hold absolute power. His life was marked by political shifts, wars, and deep changes in how Yemen was governed. He shaped the nation through both unification and conflict.

Saleh's journey began in the military. He was born on March 21, 1947, in the village of Beit al-Ahmar. He joined the Royal Armed Forces in 1958 as an infantry soldier. By 1963, he had become a second lieutenant in the armored corps. He participated in the military coup of 1962 that helped create the Yemen Arab Republic. After training in Iraq, he rose through the ranks to become a colonel. In 1977, President Ahmad al-Ghashmi appointed him as the military governor of Taiz.

His rise to the presidency happened after a sudden change in leadership. President al-Ghashmi was assassinated in June 1978. Following this event, Saleh was appointed to a provisional presidency council. On July 17, 1978, the parliament elected him president of North Yemen. He also held the roles of chief of staff and commander-in-chief. To maintain control, Saleh built a patronage system. This meant he gave important government positions to his family and loyal tribes. He relied heavily on his own Sanhan tribe and the Hamdan San'a tribe.

In 1990, a major historical event occurred when North and South Yemen unified.

This created the new Republic of Yemen. Saleh became the president, sharing power through a Presidential Council. This council included leaders like Ali Salem al-Beidh and Abdullah al-Ahmar. However, tensions between the north and south led to a brief civil war. Saleh's forces, aided by groups like the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, won in July 1994. After this victory, Saleh transitioned to autocratic rule. This is a system where one leader holds most of the power.

Saleh maintained his position through several elections and legal changes. In 1999, he became the first president directly elected by the people. He won that election with 96.2% of the vote. He also won elections in 2006 and a constitutional referendum in 2001. During his rule, he was promoted to the rank of field marshal in 1997. While he brought some stability, he also faced criticism. Some observers noted that he used public funds to benefit his own family. This occurred even as much of the country lived in extreme poverty.

His relationship with foreign powers changed over time. Initially, Saleh's government opposed the Gulf War, which caused many Yemenis to leave Saudi Arabia. Later, he developed much closer ties with Western nations, especially the United States. He did this during the global war on terror.

He also managed complex domestic issues, such as an insurgency by the Ansar Allah movement, known as the Houthis. His ability to navigate these international and local pressures was a key part of his long presidency.

In 2011, the Arab Spring movement reached Yemen. Large protests broke out, making his position very difficult. Saleh eventually resigned in 2012, and Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi became president. However, Saleh remained active in politics. In 2015, he allied with the Houthis during the Yemeni civil war. Later, in December 2017, he switched sides again to join his former enemies. This included Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. On December 4, 2017, Saleh was killed during a battle in Sanaa. His death marked the end of a long and complicated era in Yemeni history.
