Jean-Pierre Boyer was a very important leader in Haiti. He was born in Port-au-Prince on February 15, 1776. His father was a French tailor. His mother was an African woman from the Congo. Boyer went to France to get an education. Later, he returned to help his home. He fought in the Haitian Revolution to make his country free.

Boyer was a skilled military officer. He joined many different groups to fight for freedom. He worked with leaders like Alexandre Pétion and Jean-Jacques Dessalines. These leaders fought against French troops. The French tried to bring back slavery to the island. Boyer and his allies fought hard to stop this. By 1804, Haiti became an independent nation. This was a huge victory for the people.

Boyer became the president of Haiti in 1818. He served for almost 25 years. This was the longest time any leader ruled Haiti. He worked to bring the country together. In 1820, he reunited the north and south parts of Haiti. He also took control of the Spanish side of the island. This brought all of Hispaniola under one government by 1822. He wanted to keep the whole island safe from other countries.

One of Boyer's hardest jobs was dealing with France. He wanted France to officially recognize Haiti as a free country. In 1825, he signed a treaty to do this. Haiti had to pay France a lot of money. This was called an indemnity. The amount was very large. It was 150 million francs at first. This debt was very hard for Haiti to pay. It made it difficult for the government to build new things.

Boyer also helped people move to Haiti. In 1824, about 6,000 Black Americans moved to the island. They came from places like New York and Philadelphia. They wanted to live in a free black nation. Many of these people stayed and started new lives. They even used their English skills to help with trade. Boyer ruled the island until 1843. After that, he lost support and left his position.
