André Rigaud was a very important leader during the Haitian Revolution. This was a time of big changes in the land then called Saint-Domingue.

Rigaud was a military leader who fought for the interests of free people of color. These were people who were neither white nor enslaved. He was a complex person who held many different views. His choices helped shape the history of the nation that became Haiti.

Rigaud's life began with a mix of different worlds. He was born on January 17, 1761, in Les Cayes.

His father was a wealthy French planter named André Rigaud. His mother was a slave woman named Rose Bossy Depa. His father sent him to Bordeaux, France, to learn a trade. There, Rigaud trained to be a skilled goldsmith. He even wore a straight brown wig to look more like a white man.

As he grew up, Rigaud became a powerful political figure. He fought for the rights of free people of color in the colony. By the mid-1790s, he was leading an army in the West and South departments.

He worked with French leaders who had abolished slavery in 1793. However, Rigaud did not want to share power with Toussaint Louverture. Toussaint was a famous leader from the North. This disagreement led to the War of the South in June 1799.

Life was often difficult for Rigaud after his defeat. In 1800, he tried to sail to France on a ship called the Diana.

But an American ship called the USS Experiment captured him. He became a prisoner of war and was held in Saint Kitts. Later, he returned with a French army led by General Charles Leclerc. This army tried to bring back French rule and slavery. They failed, and a leader named Jean-Jacques Dessalines won independence for Haiti.

Rigaud tried to lead one last time in December 1810. He became the President of the State of the South.

He stood against other leaders like Alexandre Pétion and Henri Christophe. Sadly, Rigaud died in September 1811. His tomb is located on a small hill near Les Cayes. Today, a new road passes near that hill to help people travel easily.
