He was born on August 15, 1782, in a town called Petit-Goâve. His mother, Marie-Catherine Soulouque, was a woman of Mandinka descent. Soulouque was born into slavery, but he became free in 1793. This happened because of a new law during the Haitian Revolution. He joined the revolutionary army in 1803 to protect his freedom. He fought hard until Haiti won its independence in 1804. He spent many years as a soldier in the Haitian Army.

Soulouque rose through the ranks of the military over forty years. He served under several different leaders in Haiti. He eventually became a lieutenant general and a top commander. In 1847, he became the 7th President of Haiti. At first, people thought he would be a quiet leader. They thought he would follow the old rules. However, Soulouque decided to take much more power for himself. He built a private army called the Zinglins to help him. He used this force to control the government and remove his rivals. This period was very difficult and violent for many people in Haiti.

In 1849, Soulouque changed Haiti from a republic to an empire.

He took the name Faustin I. He wanted his empire to look like the famous French Empire. He even created a new group of nobles to serve him. This group included 4 princes and 59 dukes. There were also 90 earls and 250 barons. He also started special awards to honor people who were loyal. He founded the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1856. He wanted to make the Haitian monarchy look very grand and strong.

Soulouque had a very large and fancy coronation ceremony.

This event took place on April 18, 1852, in Port-au-Prince. He and his wife, Empress Adélina Lévêque, were both crowned. He spent a lot of money on his royal items. He paid £2,000 just for his crown. He spent another £30,000 on other royal accessories. He wanted his costume to look like the one used by Napoleon. During the ceremony, he shouted, "Vive la liberté, vive l'égalité!" This showed he wanted to sound like a great leader.

Being an emperor brought many hard jobs and many fights. Soulouque tried to take control of the Dominican Republic three times. His first attempt was in 1849, but his army had to leave. His second attempt in 1850 was stopped by other countries. In 1855, he led a huge army of 30,000 men. This third invasion also failed after heavy fighting. Because of these losses, he lost the support of his people. He stepped down from power in 1859 due to pressure. He lived in Jamaica for a while before returning to Haiti. He died in 1867, marking the end of an era.
