He lived during a very busy time in history. His life began in 1801 in a place called Hincha. At that time, the land was changing hands between Spain and France. Santana grew up in a family of cattle herders. His family moved to different towns like El Seibo to find safety. Even though he never went to school, he became a very powerful man.

In 1822, the Republic of Haiti took control of the land. This was a big change for the people living there. Later, a group called La Trinitaria worked to make the country independent. Santana joined this movement to help win freedom. In 1844, the Dominican Republic was finally proclaimed as a new nation.

Santana led an army of 3,000 men to fight. He won a major victory at the Battle of Azua. This win helped make the new country feel much stronger.

Santana served as president several different times. He helped create the first constitution in 1844. A constitution is a set of important rules for a country. However, Santana was a very strict and authoritarian leader. He wanted to have total control over everything. He used a special rule called Article 210 to protect himself. This rule meant he could not be held responsible for his actions. Because of this, he punished many people who disagreed with him.

In 1849, a new challenge arrived from Haiti. President Faustin Soulouque led an army into the Dominican Republic. The sitting president, Manuel Jimenes, did not act quickly enough. The government asked Santana to lead the defense instead. Santana led his troops to a great victory at the Battle of Las Carreras.

Because of this win, people called him the "Liberator of the Fatherland." They even gave him a special honorary sword.

Later in his life, Santana made a choice that many people disliked. He did not want the country to stay independent. Instead, he wanted the Dominican Republic to join the Spanish Empire again. He asked Queen Isabella II of Spain to take control. In 1862, the Queen gave him the title of Marquess of Las Carreras.

This choice caused a lot of anger among the people. He died during a war fought to win back the country's independence. The Dominican Republic finally became free again in 1865.
