Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó was a soldier and a leader in the Dominican Republic. He was born on June 11, 1932, in a place called San Juan de la Maguana. His family had a long history of serving in the military. His father, Fausto Caamaño Medina, was a very important military man. Fausto even served as the Secretary of State for the Armed Forces from 1952 to 1955.

Because of his family, Francisco joined the Dominican Navy at a young age. He worked hard and rose through the ranks to become an Ensign. Later, he commanded the White Helmeted Corps of the National Police.

In 1965, a big conflict called a civil war began in his country. This war started on April 24, 1965. Francisco became a leader for a group called the Constitucionalistas. This group wanted to bring back the leader chosen by the people, Juan Bosch. Bosch had been removed from his job by a military coup in September 1963.

The Constitucionalistas took control of the capital city, Santo Domingo, during the early days. They wanted to return the country to its rightful laws and government.

Things became very complicated during the war. The United States sent its military to the Dominican Republic. This was called Operation Power Pack. The U.S. leaders said they wanted to protect American citizens. They also worried that the movement might lead to a communist government.

Because the fighting was so hard, Francisco and another leader named Antonio Imbert Barrera both resigned. They left office on August 30, 1965. A new leader named Héctor García-Godoy took over for a short time.

After he left office, Francisco moved to the United Kingdom for a job. While there, he spoke with people from Cuba. He eventually went to Cuba to start a new group of rebels. In early 1973, he led a small group of people back to his home country. They landed at Playa Caracoles near Azua.

They went into the mountains of the Cordillera Central. Francisco wanted to start a revolution against the current leader, Joaquín Balaguer.

However, the group faced a very hard battle against the regular army. The army used heavy tools like artillery and airplanes. During the fight, Francisco was wounded and captured by the government forces. He was then executed by the government.

Many years passed before the Dominican government changed its mind. About twenty years later, they officially named him a hero. Today, people remember him through a large avenue and a metro station in Santo Domingo. Both of these places bear his name to honor his life.
