The Dominican Civil War was a major conflict in the Dominican Republic. It took place in the capital city of Santo Domingo. This war is also called the April Revolution. It began on April 24, 1965, and lasted until September 3, 1965. The fighting started because people wanted to return to a democracy. They wanted to bring back Juan Bosch to lead the country.

Bosch was the first president chosen by votes in the country. He took office on February 27, 1963. However, military leaders removed him from power in 1963. They put Donald Reid Cabral in charge instead. This led to many years of tension before the war finally broke out.

The war began when groups called Constitutionalists rose up against the government. These rebels included military officers and many civilian supporters. They seized the Radio Santo Domingo building to spread their message. The rebels used weapons like Molotov cocktails to fight. They also had about 5,000 armed civilians and 1,500 military members. On the other side, the Loyalists fought to keep the current government. General Elías Wessin y Wessin led the Loyalist military forces. The fighting was very intense in the streets of Santo Domingo.

Planes and tanks were used during the many battles.

The United States decided to join the conflict. They started a mission called Operation Power Pack. President Lyndon Johnson ordered this military intervention. He was worried that the rebels might be communists. The U.S. wanted to stop a revolution like the one in Cuba. On April 30, 1965, the 82nd Airborne Division landed at San Isidro Air Base. Many U.S. Marines also arrived to help. They occupied areas near foreign embassies to keep them safe.

This was the first big U.S. military move in Latin America in over 30 years.

Other countries also sent troops to help keep the peace. This group was called the Inter-American Peace Force. It was organized by the Organization of American States, or OAS. This force included 1,748 soldiers from several different nations. These nations were Brazil, Paraguay, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Honduras. General Hugo Panasco Alvim from Brazil led this peacekeeping group. They worked to distribute food and medicine to the people.

Their main job was to help stop the fighting between the two sides.

The war finally came to an end in late 1965. A ceasefire was reached in August. A new provisional government was set up in September. This helped the country start to move forward again. In 1966, the people held new elections to choose a leader. Joaquín Balaguer won that election.
