Groups called the Constitutionalists wanted Bosch to lead again. They fought against the military leaders. The fighting became very intense. Planes and tanks were used in the streets.

The United States sent many soldiers to the island. This was part of a plan called Operation Power Pack. The U.S. wanted to stop the spread of communism. Other countries also sent troops to help keep peace. These groups were part of the Organization of American States.
