Francisco Caamaño was a soldier from the Dominican Republic. He was born in 1932. His father was a high-ranking military leader. Francisco also joined the Navy when he was young. He worked hard and rose through the ranks.

In 1965, a civil war began in his country. This was a war between different groups in the land. Francisco led a group called the Constitucionalistas. They wanted to bring back a leader chosen by the people. This leader was Juan Bosch. During this time, the United States sent its military to help.

Things became very difficult for Francisco. He and his rival leaders both resigned in 1965. Later, Francisco went to Cuba. He came back to the Dominican Republic to fight for his ideas. He led a small group into the mountains.

In 1973, a fight broke out between his group and the army. Francisco was wounded and captured. He was then killed by the government forces. Many years later, the country honored him as a hero. Now, a big street and a metro station bear his name.
