Trujillo was a dictator who held almost all the control. He used his power to make sure people honored him.

He even renamed the capital city Ciudad Trujillo to celebrate himself.

Trujillo's rise to power began in the military. He joined the National Guard in 1918. He worked hard to move up the ranks. By 1924, the president made him the commander of the National Police. He turned the police into an army that he controlled.

In 1930, he helped a rebel leader named Rafael Estrella Ureña take power. In return, Trujillo was allowed to run for president. He won the election with 99% of the vote.

However, many people believed the results were not fair. An American ambassador noted there were more votes than actual voters.

Life under Trujillo was very difficult for many people. His government used a lot of force to stay in control. This is often called state terrorism.

His security forces, called the SIM, were known for being very violent. Many people were killed or made to disappear. Some estimates say between 25,000 and 50,000 people died. In 1937, the Dominican Army killed many Haitians during the Parsley massacre. This event still affects relations between the two countries today.

Trujillo also used his power to affect other nations. In 1956, a man named Jesús Galíndez disappeared in New York City. In 1960, there was an attempt to kill the Venezuelan president, Rómulo Betancourt.

These actions made other countries unhappy with the Dominican Republic. Because of this, groups like the OAS placed sanctions on the country. These sanctions were meant to limit his power. By 1960, many people in the military and the government began to turn against him. This included the famous Mirabal sisters, who were his opponents.

On May 30, 1961, Trujillo was assassinated.

A group of people led by Antonio Imbert Barrera carried out the plan. After he died, his son Ramfis took control for a short time. Eventually, the Trujillo family had to leave the country in exile. This led to a civil war in the Dominican Republic. Finally, in 1966, the country moved to a system with many different political parties. People today still have many different views on his long rule. Some remember the economic growth, while others remember the violence.
