Alfredo Stroessner was a powerful leader in Paraguay. He served as the country's 42nd president for 35 years. People often called his era "El Stronato." He was a general in the Paraguayan army. His rule changed how the country worked for many decades. He held power from 1954 until 1989.

Stroessner took control through a coup in May 1954. A coup is when the military takes over a government. He was the only candidate in the 1954 election. This happened because other political parties were banned. He stayed in power by changing the laws. In 1967, a new constitution was made. In 1977, he changed the laws again. These changes allowed him to run for office many times. He won seven re-elections after his first term.

His time as leader was marked by strict control. He used the army and secret police to keep order. He placed the whole country under a state of siege. This meant the government could arrest people without a trial. He also stopped public meetings and protests. Many people who disagreed with him were treated unfairly. Some were sent to prison or hurt. It is estimated that 3,000 to 4,000 people were murdered. Many others were imprisoned or disappeared.

Stroessner had a close relationship with the United States. He was very much against communism. Because of this, the U.S. gave Paraguay money and training. Between 1962 and 1975, the U.S. gave $146 million to the government. Nearly 400 Paraguayan military members trained on U.S. soil. However, these ties cooled in the 1980s. This happened because of human rights issues and other crimes. The U.S. eventually added his regime to a list of dictatorships.

His long rule finally ended in 1989. A man named Andrés Rodríguez led a coup against him. This happened on February 2 and 3. Stroessner was sent to live in exile in Brazil. He lived there until he died on August 16, 2006. Even after he left, his political party stayed in power. The Colorado Party still rules Paraguay today. His history remains a very important part of the nation.
