This was a time when the military ruled the nation. Geisel was a high-ranking Army General before he became president. He was born in 1907 to German immigrant parents. His childhood was spent in a place called Bento Gonçalves. He grew up speaking both German and Portuguese at home. He often thought about the different ways his German and Italian friends lived.

Geisel had a long career in the military. He joined the army as a young man in 1921. He worked very hard and graduated at the top of his class twice.

He became a Lieutenant-General and later a four-star General. He also led Petrobras, which is a large oil company in Brazil. In 1964, he was part of a group that changed the government. He later served as a top official for President Castelo Branco. His brother, Orlando, was also a very important leader in the army.

He won the election with a very large number of votes. He received 400 votes, which was about 84 percent of the total. The opposition candidate, Ulysses Guimarães, received 76 votes. Geisel started his work as president on March 15, 1974. He had to lead the country through many hard economic times. One big problem was a global oil crisis in 1973.

During his presidency, Geisel started a plan to make Brazil more free. He called this plan "abertura," which means a gradual relaxation of rule.

He wanted to move the country toward democracy slowly. He worked on huge building projects like the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant. He also helped change how Brazil talked to other nations. Brazil started having diplomatic relations with China and Angola. He even had some disagreements with the United States government. He wanted Brazil to find new friends and new ways to grow.

After he stopped being president, Geisel remained an influential person. He stayed involved with the military through the 1980s.
