His presidency occurred during the period of the Brazilian military dictatorship. Geisel was born in 1907 in Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul. He was raised in a Lutheran family by German immigrant parents. His father, Guilherme Augusto Geisel, was a German teacher. Geisel grew up speaking both German and Portuguese at home. He often noted the cultural differences between his strict German upbringing and his more relaxed Italian neighbors.

Geisel had a highly successful military career. He entered the army in 1921 and graduated at the top of his class twice.

He studied at the Military School of Realengo and became an artillery officer. Throughout his life, he witnessed major shifts in Brazilian history. These included the Revolution of 1930 and the Getúlio Vargas dictatorship. He rose through the ranks to become a four-star Army General. In 1969, he was appointed president of Petrobras, which is the state-owned oil company. His brother, Orlando Geisel, was also a powerful figure as the Minister of the Army.

Geisel entered the presidency through a specific political process. In 1973, President Emílio Médici selected him as his successor. During this era, the military command chose the candidate. The Congress would then approve the choice to maintain the appearance of democracy. Geisel ran under the National Renewal Alliance, also known as ARENA. He ran alongside his vice-presidential candidate, Adalberto Pereira dos Santos. In the election, Geisel won 400 votes, which was 84.04% of the total. The opposition candidate, Ulysses Guimarães, received only 76 votes. Geisel officially assumed the presidency on March 15, 1974.

His term was defined by complex economic challenges. Before his presidency, the "Brazilian Miracle" saw growth rates above 10% per year. However, a global oil shock crisis hit in 1974. Because Brazil imported much of its oil, the country's foreign debt began to rise. Growth slowed to between 5% and 6% per year. Geisel responded by investing heavily in massive infrastructure projects. These included highways, telecommunications, and the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant. He also opened Brazil to foreign oil companies to help meet energy needs.

Geisel also managed a transition in how Brazil was governed. He introduced a plan called abertura, which means a gradual relaxation of rule.

He also used the term distensão to describe this softening of authoritarian control. He wanted to achieve the maximum development possible with minimum necessary security. This process included the repeal of Institutional Act 5, or AI-5. He also allowed exiled citizens to return to the country. However, his government still faced violence from hardline groups. This included the 1975 murder of Vladimir Herzog by regime opponents.

In foreign policy, Geisel practiced what he called "responsible pragmatism."

He moved away from a strict alliance with the United States. Brazil established new diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. He also recognized the independence of Angola and established ties with Mozambique. Because Brazil relied on imported oil, he took a more neutral stance in Middle Eastern affairs. He even signed a nuclear agreement with West Germany. This agreement caused tension with the United States government. Geisel sought new economic opportunities in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Japan.

After leaving the presidency in 1979, Geisel remained an influential figure. He maintained influence over the military throughout the 1980s. In the 1985 presidential election, he supported the opposition candidate, Tancredo Neves.

This support helped reduce military resistance to the new civilian government. He also served as the president of Norquisa, a petrochemical holding company. Throughout his life, he received many international honors. These included the Grand Cross of the National Order of the Legion of Honour from France. He also received the Collar of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum from Japan.
