During his time in power, Figueiredo made several big changes. In 1979, he signed an amnesty law. This law helped politicians who were removed from office. He also changed how political parties worked. In 1980, the old two-party system was ended. This led to the creation of new groups. One was the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party. The other was the Democratic Social Party. Figueiredo joined the Democratic Social Party himself.

Figueiredo's presidency was also a very difficult time for Brazil. The country faced a huge economic crisis. Prices for things began to rise very fast. This is called inflation. It went from 45% to 230% in just six years. Brazil also owed a lot of money to other nations. The foreign debt went over $100 billion for the first time. This forced the government to ask the IMF for help in 1982.

Many people in Brazil wanted more say in their government. In 1983, a group called Diretas Já started a movement. They wanted people to vote for the president directly. This proposal was sent to Congress, but they rejected it. Even so, the government held an indirect election. This election helped end the military rule in Brazil. A man named Tancredo Neves became the next president. This marked a major change for the nation.

João Figueiredo was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1918. His father was a general named Euclides Figueiredo. He spent much of his life in the military. He was a captain in 1944 and a major in 1952. He even served as a military attache in Paraguay. After his time as president, he lived a quiet life. He lived in an apartment in Rio de Janeiro. He died in December 1999 at the age of 81.
