Aristides Pereira was a very important leader from Cape Verde. He was born on November 17, 1923, in a place called Fundo das Figueiras. This place is on the island of Boa Vista. Long ago, Cape Verde was not a free nation. It was ruled by another country called Portugal. Pereira wanted his people to be free. He joined a group called the PAIGC to fight for independence. He even used a secret name, Alfredo Bangura, while he worked.

In 1975, Cape Verde finally became an independent country. Pereira became its very first president on July 5, 1975. He served in this role for many years until 1991. During this time, he had to lead a very young nation. The islands were very poor and had little food. There were also many dry seasons with no rain. Pereira worked hard to help his people survive these hard times. He used special programs like FAIMO to create jobs for people in rural areas. These jobs helped people build important things like roads and buildings.

History shows that Pereira was a very careful leader. During the Cold War, the world was split into two sides. One side was the United States and the other was the Soviet Union. Many leaders felt they had to pick a side. However, Pereira chose a path called non-alignment. This meant he did not want to pick just one side. He worked with many different countries instead. He even turned down some military help from the Soviets. He wanted to keep his country safe and independent.

There were many big changes during his time in charge. In 1980, a coup happened in the nearby land of Guinea-Bissau. This changed how the two countries talked to each other. Pereira had to make new decisions for Cape Verde. He also worked to make the economy stronger. He helped build a system to move food and goods between the islands. This was done through government companies like EMPA. These steps helped the people get what they needed to live.

Today, we can see his impact on the world. He wanted everyone to have a good education. He hoped that schools would help people learn about their history. Because of these goals, Cape Verde has many people who can read and write. In 1991, the country moved to a new way of voting. Pereira stepped down to let new leaders take over. He passed away in Portugal on September 22, 2011. To honor him, an airport on Boa Vista was given his name.
