Luís Cabral was a very important leader for the country of Guinea-Bissau. He was the first person to serve as its president. His life was tied to the fight for freedom from Portuguese rule. This fight was a long and difficult struggle for many people. He helped lead a group that wanted their own nation. This group was called the PAIGC.

Luís grew up in a city called Bissau. His parents came from a place called Cape Verde. He learned about math and business when he was young. In 1956, he helped start the PAIGC with five other people. Later, he helped organize a strike at a dock. This was a way for workers to stand up for themselves. This event was very sad because many lives were lost. Because of this, the group began to fight a war.

His leadership changed after his half-brother, Amílcar Cabral, died. Amílcar was a famous thinker who also helped start the PAIGC. After Amílcar died, the Guinea-Bissau branch of the party followed Luís. In 1974, a big change happened in Portugal called the Carnation Revolution. This led to Guinea-Bissau becoming a free country on September 10, 1974. Luís Cabral then became the first president of this new nation.

As president, Luís worked on many big projects for his people. He wanted to build up the new country through national reconstruction. He received help from places like the USSR and China. Because of this work, more people could go to school. More people could also see a doctor for health care. However, there were also hard times during his rule. Some people felt the government was too strict or unfair.

In 1980, a military coup changed everything for Luís. A man named João Bernardo Vieira led the army to take power. This event happened on November 14, 1980. Luís was removed from his job and arrested for 13 months. He had to live in other lands, like Cuba and Portugal. He finally returned to his home in 1999. Luís Cabral died in Portugal in 2009 at the age of 78.
