He trained his soldiers to grow food for their communities. This helped everyone stay fed during the war. He also started a system of moving markets called bazaars. These markets sold goods at low prices to local people. He even set up moving hospitals to give medical care. These hospitals used supplies from the USSR and Sweden.

His journey began long before he became a famous leader. He was born on September 12, 1924, in Bafatá. His parents, Juvenal and Iva, came from Cape Verde. He studied in the town of Mindelo in Cape Verde. Later, he went to Lisbon, Portugal, to study more. While in Lisbon, he started a center for African studies. He used this center to help people talk about independence.

In the 1950s, Cabral traveled a huge distance to learn. He traveled more than 60,000 kilometers across Portuguese Guinea. This helped him understand the land and the people deeply. In 1956, he founded a group called the PAIGC. This group fought for the freedom of his home lands. He also helped start the MPLA in Angola that year. He worked with other leaders like Agostinho Neto.

Sadly, Cabral died on January 20, 1973. He was killed at a roadblock near Conakry. He died just months before his people gained independence. Today, many places around the world honor his name. There is an airport in Cape Verde named for him. There is also an Amílcar Cabral University in Guinea-Bissau. His life continues to inspire many people today.
