He was born in 1915 in a part of Bamako called Bamako-Coura. At that time, his home was part of a place called French Sudan. His family had a long history. They claimed to be from the Keïta dynasty. This was the family that started the old Mali Empire. Keïta grew up to be a teacher. He taught in places like Bamako, Sikasso, and Tombouctou.

He even went to a special school in Dakar. He was at the top of his class there.

Keïta spent many years working in politics. In 1945, he and Mamadou Konaté started the Sudanese Union. This group later joined the African Democratic Rally, or the RDA. Keïta became a very well-known leader during the 1950s. He served as the mayor of Bamako in 1956. He also worked in the government of France. In 1959, he became the Prime Minister of the Mali Federation. This was a group made of Mali and Senegal. However, the federation did not last very long. Senegal decided to leave the group in 1960.

After the federation ended, Mali became its own independent country.

Modibo Keïta became the very first president of Mali. He used ideas called African socialism to run the country. This meant the government took control of many businesses. He created a company called SOMIEX in October 1960. This company managed the trade of goods like sugar and tea. He also helped start a new money called the Malian franc in 1962. These changes were meant to help the country grow and modernize.

Keïta also wanted to bring African nations together. This idea is called Pan-Africanism. He helped write the rules for the Organization of African Unity. In 1963, he helped end a conflict called the Sand War. This war was between Morocco and Algeria. Keïta invited leaders from both sides to Bamako to talk. He worked with Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia to reach a deal. Because of this work, he won the Lenin Peace Prize.

He even traveled to America to meet President John F. Kennedy.

Life became very hard for Mali in the late 1960s. The economy began to struggle and prices went up. A very poor harvest in 1968 made things even worse. Many people were unhappy with how the government was acting. In November 1968, a man named Moussa Traoré led a coup d'état. This meant the military took control of the government. Traoré replaced Keïta as the president. Keïta was sent to prison in the town of Kidal. He stayed in prison until he died in 1977.
