Samori used his Islamic faith to help organize his people. He also used these religious principles to grow his empire. He was a very important figure in the history of the region.

Samori's life began with many big changes. He was born in Manyambaladugu to a merchant father. During his youth, trade with Europeans was growing fast. This trade brought new items like cloth and kola nuts. It also brought many new firearms to West Africa. These guns changed how people fought in wars. This made conflicts much more serious and deadly.

As a young man, Samori learned many hard skills. In 1853, his mother was captured during a raid. Samori went to the land of the Cissé clan to trade himself for her. He served as a warrior there for seven years. During this time, he learned discipline and how to use guns. He also became a Muslim. Eventually, he and his mother were freed in 1859. He returned home to Sanankoro after his long service.

Samori rose to power by leading his own group of warriors. He was very good at making alliances with powerful families. In 1873, he captured the area of Bissandougou. He used clever tricks and bribes to win battles. For example, he once gave a bribe to a leader named Diakite. This helped Samori defeat a king named Kourouma. By 1878, Samori was strong enough to call himself the Faama of the Wassoulou Empire.

Samori is well known for fighting the French. The French wanted to expand their rule into West Africa. In 1882, Samori fought the French at the Battle of Samaya. He used quick, hit-and-run attacks to stay ahead of them. This style of fighting helped him protect his lands for a long time. He even tried to work with the British in Sierra Leone. He bought many modern rifles to help his soldiers. Samori was finally captured in 1898.
