history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Tukulor Empire was a large Islamic state in West Africa. It lasted from 1861 to 1890. A leader named Elhadj Oumar Foutiyou Tall started it. He was from the Toucouleur people of Senegal. He wanted to spread Islam across the Sahel region. Many different groups of people joined his cause. These included the Fula, Soninke, and Moors. Some people joined to find more freedom. Others wanted to push out European groups from their land.

Omar Tall grew his power through many steps. He first traveled to many places for religious study. In 1851, he founded the city of Dinguiraye. He moved his community to this new place. After that, he began to focus on military struggles. He used many weapons to win new lands. He even used cannons captured from the French. These tools helped him win important battles. He eventually moved his capital to the city of Segou.

History shows that the empire faced many hard jobs. In 1855, Omar Tall took the city of Nioro du Sahel. This became a capital for a short time. He also fought the French near the Senegal River. In 1857, he tried to siege a French fort. A French governor named Louis Faidherbe arrived to stop him. Later, Omar Tall made a treaty with the French in 1860. This treaty helped define which lands his people would rule. It gave them control over the Bambara states.

Winning battles was not the only way the empire worked. The government had a very organized way of ruling. They used special leaders called qadis and marabouts for justice. The state collected taxes to pay for its needs. They also collected money from trade. The army was a very large part of the budget. It was a professional group with many layers. They even had special bodyguards called sofas. However, money was sometimes hard to manage. High inflation made things difficult for the people.

Eventually, the empire began to change and fade away. Omar Tall died after a rebellion in 1864. His son, Ahmadu Tall, took over the leadership. Ahmadu had to fight many people to keep control. He also dealt with family members who wanted power. At the same time, the French were growing stronger. They captured the city of Nioro in 1891. By 1893, the French took full control of the area. This ended the Tukulor Empire for good.
