history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Jolof Empire was a large and powerful state in West Africa. It sat in the land we now call Senegal. It also ruled parts of Mauritania and the Gambia. This empire was made of many different groups of people. Most were Wolof, Serer, or Fula.

Stories tell us how the empire began. A man named Ndiadiane Ndiaye is said to be the founder. Some legends say he was a mysterious stranger from the Senegal River. He once settled a fight between villages over wood or fish. The people were so impressed that they offered him the kingship. This helped create a large group of states called a confederacy.

At its height, the empire was very strong. In the 1440s, Portuguese ships began to visit the coast. The empire used horses from these traders to grow its power. One ruler, Buurba Biram Njeme Eler, conquered new lands in the 1450s. He even moved the capital to a place called Thieung. The empire could field 100,000 infantry and 10,000 cavalry soldiers.

Life in Jolof had many different roles for people. There were nobles and free men. There were also special groups called occupational castes. Blacksmiths made weapons and helped settle fights. Griots were storytellers who kept the history of the families.

Women also held important positions in society. A leader called the Lingeer was very influential in politics. She owned villages and collected tribute. In the state of Walo, women could even become rulers.

Eventually, the empire began to break apart. There were many fights over who should be the next Buurba. Some leaders wanted to move to the coast for trade. This caused trouble with other princes. In 1549, a big fight called the Battle of Danki happened. After this battle, many states left the empire. By the year 1600, the great empire was gone.
