The Ghana Empire was a powerful state in West Africa. It was located in the Sahel region. This area is in modern-day Mauritania and Mali. People also called the empire Wagadu. The name Ghana actually meant "warrior" or "war chief." This was the title used for its rulers. Some people even called them the "kings of gold."

This empire grew wealthy through a special way of trading. They did not own the gold mines themselves. Instead, they controlled the paths between different lands. They kept a monopoly on gold moving north. They also controlled salt moving south. This trade made the empire very rich. The use of camels helped this process a lot. Camels could cross the dry Sahara Desert easily.

History tells us different stories about how Ghana began. Oral traditions say a man named Dinga started it. He traveled from the east to the western Sudan. Some legends say his son Dyabe founded Wagadu. Other writers from the Middle Ages had different ideas. They sometimes thought the rulers came from far away. However, modern scholars look at the land and the people. They believe the empire grew from local Soninke groups.

Many important records help us learn about this time. A scholar named al-Khwarizmi put Ghana on a map in 833. Another writer, al-Bakri, wrote about the region in the 11th century. These records show that Ghana was a very large state. It was even compared to the size of Morocco. Some stories say forty-four kings ruled the empire in total. The empire was a major power in the Sahel for a long time.

Even though the empire fell, its story did not end. It began to decline in the second millennium. By the 13th century, it became part of the Mali Empire. Still, the empire left a mark on the land. Many cities in the area were built because of its influence. In 1957, a new country named Ghana was born. It chose this name to honor the ancient empire.
