This empire was much more than just a group of people. It was a place where many different customs and laws spread. The empire helped shape the culture of the whole region. It grew from a small kingdom near the Niger River. This happened as older empires in the area began to fade away.

The empire grew through trade and strong leadership. It started in a place called the Manding region. Leaders used gold and salt to build their wealth. They also used laws to keep the many lands together. A group of people called griots kept the history alive. These storytellers used oral traditions to pass down important facts. This helped everyone remember the great deeds of their kings.

Sundiata Keita was the founder of this great empire. He was a warrior-prince from the Keita dynasty. Long ago, he was forced into exile with his mother. He later led a revolt against the Sosso Empire. In about 1235, he won the Battle of Kirina. This victory made him the first mansa of Mali. A mansa is a title for a king.

The empire reached a golden age under Mansa Musa. He took the throne around 1312. Musa was a very wealthy and well-educated man. In 1324, he went on a famous trip to Mecca. He took a huge group of people with him. He gave away so much gold that it changed the value of gold in Egypt.

He also helped build schools and mosques in Timbuktu.

Eventually, the empire began to face many hard jobs. Other strong lands like the Songhai Empire started to take its borders. In 1542, the Songhai tried to take the capital. Mali tried to make a comeback later on. However, a big defeat happened near Djenne in 1599. After this, the empire broke into smaller groups. The Keita family moved to the town of Kangaba.
