It spans from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. Many strong kingdoms lived in this area for many centuries. These states were often centered on the Sahel region. They grew very wealthy by controlling trade paths. These paths crossed the large Sahara Desert.

These kingdoms used special animals to stay in control. Camels and horses helped them move very fast. These animals were also useful during battles. Fast travel helped leaders rule a large empire. However, the kingdoms could not grow into southern forests. Horses and camels could not survive forest diseases. Mounted warriors were also not helpful in the woods.

Life in the Sahel included many different jobs. Some people practiced farming and raised livestock. Others went hunting or fishing in the water. Many people were skilled at making crafts. They worked with metal, cloth, and clay. People also traded goods over long distances. They even used their own types of money. They moved along rivers and across lakes.

The Ghana Empire was the first major state.

It started around the 3rd century. It sat in what is now Senegal and Mauritania. Ghana grew rich because of the camel. Wolof traders helped bring camels to the region. Ghana lasted from the 3rd century until the 13th century. Later, the Mali Empire rose near the Niger River. Mali reached its peak in the 1350s.

The Songhai Empire became the largest state in African history. It grew very fast under King Sonni Ali. By the year 1500, it stretched from Cameroon to the Maghreb. An invasion by Morocco caused it to shrink in 1591. In the east, the Kanem-Bornu state was also important. The Hausa city-states lived near them. Later, the Sokoto Caliphate rose in 1810. These states helped shape the history of the Sahel.
