Most Tuareg people are semi-nomadic pastoralists. This means they move from place to place with their animals. They mostly practice the religion of Islam. They speak languages like Tamasheq or Tamajeq. These languages belong to the Berber branch of the Afroasiatic family. There are about 1.2 million people who speak these languages.

Tuareg culture has many unique and interesting parts. Many men wear a traditional veil called a tagelmust. This cloth is often dyed with indigo. The blue color can sometimes stain the skin underneath. Because of this, some people call them the "Blue People."

The name Tuareg might come from the word Targa. In the Berber language, Targa means a drainage channel. Some also say the name means "freemen." This name was originally used for the noble people. They also have a special writing script called Tifinagh.

History tells us about the deep roots of the Tuareg. A famous queen named Tin Hinan led them long ago. She is believed to have lived between the 4th and 5th centuries. Her tomb is still in the Hoggar Mountains of southern Algeria.

In the past, Tuareg groups were organized into large confederations. Each group was ruled by a supreme chief called an Amenokal. These leaders were helped by a council of elders. Some groups were even called "Drum Groups." This was because the chief used a drum as a symbol.

They also held raids called rezzous to gain wealth. These raids often happened after the first rains. This timing ensured that their camels had enough food. In 1860, a group traveled 1,200 kilometers to find camels.

In Mali, they make up about 3% of the people. They have lived in these desert lands for a very long time. They have stayed strong through many changes in history.
