They live near the city of Bandiagara in West Africa. Their population is between 400,000 and 800,000 people. The Dogon people speak their own languages. These languages are part of a special branch of the Niger-Congo family. They are not closely related to any other languages.

This group is famous for its unique art and traditions.

Dogon life is shaped by the land around them. The Bandiagara Escarpment is a huge sandstone cliff. It stretches for about 150 kilometers. The Dogon built their villages along these high walls. They chose this spot to stay safe from harm. They also needed to be near water. A small stream often runs at the foot of the cliff during the wet season.

This helped them survive in the dry area.

History shows that the Dogon moved to these cliffs a long time ago. They settled in the Bandiagara area about a thousand years ago. They moved there because they did not want to change their religious beliefs. They wanted to stay away from groups that were spreading Islam. Some stories say they came from a place called Mande. Other stories say they came from the east or the west. Over time, they moved north to the Sanga region in the 1400s.
