Every year, the rivers flood the land. This flood turns the town into a large island. People must use causeways or ferries to reach it.

The town is part of a large area called a commune. This area includes Djenné and ten nearby villages. These villages are named Ballé, Diabolo, Gomnikouboye, Kamaraga, Kéra, Niala, Soala, Syn, Velingara, and Yenleda. In 2009, the population was 32,944 people.

The weather in Djenné is often hot and dry. In the months of April and May, temperatures can reach 40 °C. From June to September, most of the rain falls. A wind called the Harmattan blows from the Sahara Desert. This wind brings dust and creates a hazy sky. Between December and March, the days are slightly cooler. During these winter months, the temperature stays below 32 °C.

The modern town of Djenné was settled after 1000 AD. For a long time, Djenné was a busy center for trade. People moved goods like gold and salt through the area. This trade helped the town become very wealthy and strong. It was also a famous place for Islamic learning.

Many different groups have lived in or ruled Djenné. The Mali Empire was a strong land in the 13th century. Djenné had a complicated relationship with these rulers. Later, the Songhai Empire grew in power. In 1471, the Songhai leader Sonni Ali conquered the city. The siege lasted for about six months. The flooding of the Bani river helped protect the city. However, the river also helped the Songhai bring their boats to the walls.
