It is the second largest city in the country. In 2009, the census showed 225,753 people lived there. The city sits near the borders of Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. It acts as a crossroads for many different lands. People use it to trade between the coast and landlocked areas. This makes it an important port for many goods.

Long ago, Sikasso was the capital of the Kénédougou Kingdom. It was a small village until the year 1870. A leader named Tieba Traoré moved the capital there. He built his palace on the sacred Mamelon hill.

He also built a massive tata to protect the city. This tata was a huge wall used for defense. It made Sikasso the largest fortified city in west Africa.

The city faced many hard battles in its history. A leader named Samori Ture attacked the city for 15 months. This siege lasted from 1887 to 1888. Later, the French army attacked in 1898. They used big guns against the tata walls. The city fell on May 1st after much fighting. A leader named Babemba Traore died during this time. He chose to die rather than be captured.

Today, the climate in Sikasso is tropical. This means there is a wet season and a dry season. Most of the rain falls between May and October. August is the month with the most rain. The weather is very hot in March and April. The land is very good for farming. The city grows many fruits and vegetables. This helps the people grow enough food for themselves.

Many different groups of people live in the city. These groups include the Senufo Bamana, the Bobo, and the Minianka. Most people go to Muslim mosques for worship. There are also Christian churches and temples in the area. You can visit the large market or the Missirikoro Grotto. Every June, people hold a festival for music.
