This city is much larger than any other place in Guinea. In fact, it is four times bigger than Kankan. A 2025 census shows that over 3.4 million people live here. This is about one-sixth of all the people in the whole country.

The city's weather follows a tropical monsoon pattern. This means there is a wet season and a dry season. From December to April, the dry season brings a wind called the harmattan. This wind makes it so almost no rain falls.

The wet season brings a huge amount of rain to the area. July and August are the wettest months of the year. Sunshine changes with the seasons too. March is the month with the most sunshine. August is the month with the least sunshine.

Conakry has a very interesting history. It began on a small place called Tombo Island.

Later, the city grew onto the nearby Kaloum Peninsula. Britain gave the island to France in 1887. In 1885, the villages there had fewer than 500 people. By 1904, Conakry became the capital of French Guinea. It grew quickly after a railway opened to Kankan. This railway helped people export groundnuts from the interior.

The city is divided into five main areas called communes.

Kaloum is the city center. Dixinn is home to many embassies and a university. Ratoma is a place known for its nightlife. Matam is another urban area. Finally, Matoto is where the international airport is located. The city also has a special regional government. A governor leads the Conakry Region. This region is one of eight in the country.

Life in the city involves many different activities. The port is the heart of the economy. Ships carry things like bananas and alumina.

People also make food, cement, and metal products there. The city has many places for worship. You can visit the Grand Mosque of Conakry. There are also churches like St. Mary's Cathedral.
