geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

São Tomé is a very important city in Central Africa. It is the capital and largest city of the country named São Tomé and Príncipe. You can find this city on the northeast side of São Tomé Island. It sits right on the edge of Ana Chaves Bay. A small island called Ilhéu das Cabras sits in the water nearby. The city is a busy hub for the whole island. A large highway circles almost the entire island and connects the city to other towns. These towns include Guadalupe, Santana, and Trindade.

The weather in the city stays mostly warm throughout the year. It has a tropical climate with both wet and dry seasons. The wet season lasts from October all the way through May. Even during the dry season, the city can feel very damp. This is because a cold ocean current called the Benguela Current flows nearby. This current makes the air very cloudy and foggy. Even when it is not raining, the fog can stay for a long time.

This city has a very long and complex history. The island was empty before the Portuguese arrived around the year 1470. In 1493, a man named Álvaro Caminha founded the colony. The Portuguese wanted to use the land to grow sugarcane. For a long time, this island was a main center for sugar. In the sixteenth century, the city was a very important place for this crop. Later, the Dutch took control of the city for short times in 1599 and 1641.

There are many interesting buildings to see in the city today. The city is centered around a large cathedral from the sixteenth century. Most of this cathedral was rebuilt later in the 1800s. You can also visit Fort São Sebastião, which was built in 1566. This fort is now used as the São Tomé National Museum. Other important places include the Presidential Palace and many public squares called praças. The city is also known for a special kind of performance called tchiloli playing.

São Tomé is a modern place where many people live and work. It has a large airport called São Tomé International Airport. Planes fly there from places like Angola, Gabon, Ghana, and Portugal. The city is home to many schools and the University of São Tomé and Príncipe. There are also hospitals, such as the Hospital Ayres de Menezes. People use the city as a center for buses and roads. It is a place where many different parts of the country meet.
