The tropical weather stays warm because the city is near the equator. There are distinct wet and dry seasons. The wet season lasts from October to April.

Bujumbura has a long and changing history. It started as a small village in 1889. At that time, it became a military post in German East Africa. Later, it became an administrative center for the Belgian mandate of Ruanda-Urundi. When Burundi gained independence in 1962, the name changed. It went from being called Usumbura to Bujumbura. Since then, the city has seen many different changes in its people and its leaders.

Business is a huge part of life in the city.
